Pilates is a mat and equipment based exercise programme developed by Joseph Pilates. It focuses on core strengthening and breathing control whilst exercising the whole body. Pilates aims to improve both general fitness and wellbeing.
The importance of strengthening and movement training are widely recognised within physiotherapy practice. Pilates is beneficial both to improve fitness and in rehabilitation after injury. Many aches, pains and injuries can be recurrent when left unmanaged. Pilates helps to retrain body awareness through movement and strengthening of core muscle groups to enable people to move past these episodes and prevent recurrence.
The APPI Method incorporates many of Joseph Pilates original exercises but has been adapted by physiotherapists to enable a more flexible approach that suits individuals, inclusive of those who have experienced illness or injury. Exercise progression is gradual and tailored to each person. Class sizes are kept small to allow close observation and correction so that each individual gets the most of out of the exercises.
